There are 28 states (provinces) and 7 Union territories in the country. Union Territories are administered by the President of India and States have their own Government. The Prime Minister of India is the head of the central/federal government, while the President of India is the formal head. Executive power is exercised by the government. Federal legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of the Parliament of India. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. India is a "Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, and Democratic Republic". India is the largest country by population with a democratically-elected government. There are 2 major political parties in India: Indian National Congress and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). The current ruling party is an alliance led by Indian National Congress.
